The Basics
Vanessa Nelson is a British writer who lives in Scotland, United Kingdom, sharing her home with three giant dogs, an elderly cat, and a host of fictional characters.
As far as the cat is concerned, she should always come first. The older dog (pictured) lets Vanessa know when he’s not getting enough attention by chewing the house. The middle dog gets her attention by giving her a gentle nudge with his head. At least, he would say it’s gentle. And the younger dog generally finds the loudest squeaky toy.
A little bit more
Books are magic, wonder and escape. Different worlds open up through the power of words, and to get there all you have to do is open the cover, or turn on your e-reader.
I love books.
I had a life-changing, magical moment shortly after I learned to read (far too many years ago) when I realised that the stories hadn’t just appeared. Someone had made them up. Someone, some human being, had created the wonder and the magic. That’s when I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up.
Having decided I wanted to write books, I spent a long time doing other stuff like having a grown-up job and paying the mortgage and, for the last few years, being a devoted servant not only to my cat but also to three giant dogs. It’s true what they say – cats don’t have owners, they have servants.
But all the while I’ve been using a lot of my spare time scribbling away at various stories, wanting to share those stories in the hope that someone might read them and might, for a short time, find themselves in a different world.
Finally, from July 2018, I started sharing my stories with the world. And then sometime after that, around November 2022 (I think), I was luck enough to be able to start writing full time, fulfilling a life-long dream, even if my cat and dogs firmly believe that, actually, my full-time work is catering to their needs.
I write the stories that interest me, featuring characters that just won’t leave me alone. It’s a real privilege to share these stories with you and I hope you enjoy them.
